5G is all about data, and semiconductor is a key enabler in multiple ways, from data generation, data transmission to data processing. Marc Andreessen said,”software is eating up the world,” we believe semiconductors come first:
Edge device: 5G uses massively more wireless spectrum to transmit data, which requires a) more RF (Radio Frequency) semiconductor components to help transmit and receive the signal, and b) tighter integration between RF components and base-band.
Wireless infrastructure: The introduction of Massive MIMO (Multiple-input, Multiple-output) and beam-forming technology not only increases semi content to support the higher number of antennas and data streams, but it also requires smarter semiconductors to transmit data more efficiently.
Computing infrastructure: The exponential growth of data is outpacing the improvement of computing power. The new type of semiconductors like GPU and ASIC is needed to accelerate certain types of workload to make better use of the massive amount of data generated.
